The right stuff: South East Asia Property Awards

The South East Asia Property Awards 2015 gave a window on what’s best in the region’s real estate sector

It was an evening of celebration and triumph for Southeast Asia’s diverse real
estate sector as nearly 400 of the industry’s elite attended the grand finale of the
South East Asia Property Awards 2015, which was held on Wednesday, 21
October at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore.Slide11-720x400
Far East Organization became the first company ever to win the Best Developer (South East Asia) title twice at the glitzy black-tie ceremony, having previously claimed the honour in 2011, the debut year of the South East Asia Property Awards.
“We’re really grateful for this award and we want to show our appreciation to the
South East Asia Property Awards for believing in what Far East Organization is
doing,” said Vincent Lee, assistant director of the company. “We have our own
strategies and we will continue to strive hard to maintain our standards and to
inspire better lives. We hope to win this award again next year.”
Another first for the fifth annual awards, which was supported by gold sponsors
Kohler and Condo Butlers, was having a dedicated section for Singapore, in which
winners were revealed immediately after the opening speeches and right before
the four-course gala dinner graced by this year’s official suppliers, Sanpellegrino
and Corner Stone.
The biggest domestic nominee of this year, UOL Group Limited went home with
two awards, including Special Recognition in Corporate Social Responsibility –
tied with Best Developer (Singapore) winner Far East Organization – and Best
Mid-Range Condo Development for its Riverbank @ Fernvale project, plus seven
Highly Commended citations in the development and design categories.
Not far behind was Far East Organization, taking home four domestic awards
including Best Commercial Development for SBF Centre, a 31-storey sustainable
development in the heart of Singapore’s core central business district. The Green
Mark Platinum-certified project was ultimately declared the Best Green
Development (South East Asia), setting the bar high for the region’s mixed-use
segment that is becoming more involved in the green movement.Other major winners of the night included GuocoLand Group, collecting three domestic awards for the Leedon Residence, namely Best Luxury Condo Development, Best Residential Interior Design and Best Residential Architectural Design. In addition, GuocoLand’s freehold project in the Garden City’s District 10 was awarded the Best Condominium (South East Asia) trophy, beating award-winning luxury and mid-range condo projects in Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
Overall, it was a spectacular year for Singapore and Malaysia as they accepted
four awards each from Asia’s biggest and most credible real estate award-giving
body organised by Ensign Media, the Asia Property Awards, which celebrates its
tenth year.
The Best Condo Development (South East Asia) award was presented to
GuocoLand Group’s Leedon Residence, winning in all the domestic and regional
categories for which it was nominated this year. Malaysia’s prized hotel property,
WOLO Bukit Bintang by Wonderful Vantage Sdn Bhd, was judged the Best
Commercial Development (South East Asia), while the outstanding Senibong
Cove by Front Concept Sdn Bhd was declared champion in the Best Villa/Housing
Development (South East Asia) category. The two Malaysia-based projects also
accepted one design award each at the grand finals.
The awards, presented by Asia’s industry-leading monthly publication Property
Report and preceded by the inaugural Property Report Congress 2015, saw two
trophies handed to properties in Indonesia, while the Philippines and Thailand
bagged one each as other deserving finalists from Vietnam and Myanmar cheered
on their regional peers.
Mink Tan, principal architect and chief design officer of MINKKE, led the
independent judging panel. The veteran architect and designer noted that the
biggest change in the region’s property sector in the past five years has been the
speed with which the developing countries have started to catch up with the
developed ones.
“You can see developments from the less developed regions now brimming with
new ideas, though at times borrowed from the more developed countries, but
soon will be moving beyond just aping the West or the likes,” Tan commented. BDO International, one of the biggest accounting firms in the world, once again supervised the free-to-enter awards system that is universally known for its fairness and transparency. Entries were received from industry players as well as
submissions from the general public.
In addition to the 25 award categories presented during the ceremony, UOL
Group Limited’s deputy group CEO, Liam Wee Sin, accepted the Singapore Real
Estate Personality of the Year award. Chosen by the editors of Property Report,
the prestigious honour was given to the 22-year industry veteran, who is known
as an advocate of good design values, for his commitment to Singapore’s real
estate and design sectors, and helping lead UOL Group to become one of the
region’s top developers.22522269571_e9ec2edce9_b
“This evening is the end of a year-long journey to find the best of the best across
Southeast Asia. It is the crowning event of the hard work of developers and real
estate professionals in the region as it approaches a new era of economic
integration,” said Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media and publisher of
Property Report.
“The depth of innovation and leadership displayed by all the contenders this year
is a great reminder why Southeast Asia remains one of the most exciting real
estate markets internationally,” he added.
