While rice consumption in Asia is declining rapidly as a consequence of the region’s economic growth, rising disposable income, lifestyle changes and massive rural-to-urban labour migration, the staple remains Asia’s most important crop. It continues to be the single largest source of calories for the majority of consumers who are poor; in 2007, rice accounted for 29.3% of calorie intake in Asia.
