More than cashless

Giving merchants the opportunity to issue their own digital Pi Pay Fan Codes, which users can use to win prizes simply by making a transaction at the merchant’s store, is one new way that Pi Pay is working with brands on promotions that goes beyond the typical discounts. Users still enjoy an incentive to buy, while brands can protect their brand value.

On top of that, merchants can use Pi Pay’s Facebook page, which is comfortably the most popular financial services account in Cambodia with almost 700,000 fans, as leverage to promote their brand and services to a large number of engaged and passionate fans across Cambodia. Relevant digital campaigns and granular analytics give further reach and insight into customer actions and habits, and therefore allow for better retargeting and relevancy, explained Pi Pay David Sun, Growth Marketing Director.

“Pi Pay users are very active on social media, and show their admiration of Pi Pay and our partnerships. Joining the Pi Pay family allows brands to turn transactional selling into a special retail experience like no other in Cambodia, and gain exposure unrivaled by your brand’s own individual efforts. We give our partnerships a digital channel that yields transactional results and exposure. The goal is to deliver a contextual and relevant ecosystem through upstream and downstream marketing channels which includes Pi Pay’s social media presences. ” he said.

The latest marketing initiative saw Pi Pay simultaneously hosting Cambodia’s largest shopping experience in three locations – Aeon Mall Phnom Penh, Aeon Mall Sen Sok and Heritage Walk Siem Reap on 14th March 2019.

Held in conjunction with Pi Pay’s second anniversary celebration, the event was backed by a 6-week daily cash prize contest which resulted in over 150,000 transactions, and some 30,000 eager Pi Pay users spent more than $3 million on a shopping spree on Pi Pay Day itself.

“We want to offer more than just a cashless payment service – it’s also about the marketing value that comes with being a Pi Pay merchant. We are constantly working with our merchants to explore and experiment with new ways of increasing transactions via a host of differentiated marketing campaigns that offer long-term brand building value for all parties, and this clearly sets us apart from our competition, ” noted Kelly Ch’ng, Pi Pay Marketing & Communications Director.

Pi Pay Day 2019 was clearly a success, bringing in more than 2,000% increment in sales for participating merchants and inspiring bigger ideas for next year.

Sandara, a joint venture between Negocia Ventures and Canadia Group, has five shops in Cambodia selling their premium brands, including Pandora jewelry and Bering timepieces, and the addition of Pi Pay and Alipay cashless payment options has proven a success with customers, explained Sandara Brand Manager John Lim.

“We continue to see great potential working with Pi Pay, not just as a cashless service provider but also as a marketing partner to help build value for our various brands. We are thrilled with the success of Pi Pay Day 2019, and look forward to future ways to work together,” he said.

Pi Pay evolution

After nearly two years, Pi Pay is ready for the next phase of Cambodia’s cashless revolution and will soon unveil an updated version that promises a refined user experience including new features such as loyalty points, a reward scheme, and better access to an array of promotions.

“A company like ours where success and innovation is in our DNA, is always looking to live up to our brand tagine of ‘infinite possibilities.’ We are constantly innovating our product, our campaigns, and our financial inclusion efforts,” said Pi Pay Chief Executive Officer Tomas Pokorny.

Registering as a Pi Pay user, and adding money to the e-wallet has never been easier, and our financial partners now include PayGo, ABA, Sathapana, AMK, Amret, RHB Indochina, KB Kookmin Bank, and more dedicated supporters of Cambodia’s financial inclusion development will be announced soon. These partnerships mean more Cambodians can benefit from increased access to financial services with Pi Pay. City residents can easily send money to family in the provinces, who can then pay for goods at the market or buy a bus ticket or top up their phone, all without the need for cash.

Pi Pay is also the authorized partner of Chinese cashless giants Alipay, WeChat and UnionPay, and as Chinese tourism increases in cities like Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, the demand from visitors to safely access the apps they use daily at home is increasing.

Beyond cashless

Our CSR efforts continue to expand to ensure we are best supporting our partners and Cambodian society as gender inclusiveness, SME growth and digital economies are further embraced.

Pi Pay recently worked with Impact Hub Phnom Penh to develop their new Innovations Garage space, where local startups and entrepreneurs can develop their ideas and get hands-on experience with new technology.

Our long-running partnership with SHE Investments supports women-owned and women-run businesses to scale up and help meet the demands of their communities across Cambodia. Two very successful annual conferences have helped to demonstrate the importance of boosting women in business in the Kingdom, and we are proud to welcome a number of SHE graduates as Pi Pay merchants — welcome to the Pi Pay family!

As science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education continues to gain importance in the Kingdom, expect to see more from Pi Pay, as we seek ways to support young Cambodians gain the skills they need to succeed.

Ticketing, bill and insurance payments, and e-commerce are all features added to Pi Pay in 2018, and this has helped extend the range of goods and services that are part of the Pi Pay ecosystem. With ever-improved visibility to audiences in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and beyond, Pi Pay’s merchant partners are able to reach new customers and stand out from the competition.
