– Create a list with the names and telephone numbers of reputable hospitals/clinics in every city you will be visiting. Know how to contact and find your country’s embassies and consulates.
– Even if the locals don’t, wear a helmet whenever you’re on a motorbike or scooter.
– Assess the security risks in every country you visit by researching online and/or calling local police stations and embassies. Know whether or not local police are reliable.
– Leave a photocopy of your passport with someone at home. If your passport gets lost or stolen, the copy will accelerate the renewal process.
– Always carry multiple payment methods: credit cards, ATM cards, travellers’ cheques, local currency and widely used foreign currencies like Euros or American dollars. Don’t leave all of your payment methods in the same place.
– Do not travel without medical insurance. Know your policy. Make sure your insurance covers outpatient medical assistance and emergency evacuations.
– Arrange a hotel and pickup in your arrival city. If it’s a high-risk country, do not arrive at night.
– Carry a rubber door stop for added security when you sleep.
– Stay on lower floors at hotels in case of fire or explosions.
– Take a first aid course before you travel. Such knowledge will help you stay calm in an emergency. You can also assist other travellers and locals if need be.
