Verdict: a getaway within the city. Great Thai food served in a unique setting

Le Lys is well known as a quiet retreat for a romantic outing or a game of petanque. It recently relocated to Sathorn and was followed across town by its loyal clientele. They have not been disappointed. Food is served up on the patio of a colonial villa, surrounded by lush gardens. The architecture and boules next to the local cuisine pays testament to the Franco-Thai husband and wife team behind this venture.
Mrs Delmas runs the kitchen, turning out solid, local fare. Lemongrass salad is highly recommended, the subtle flavour is delicately balanced with fried peanuts, shallots and a tangy dressing. Tom kah gai spoke of a knowledgeable hand behind the cooking, the sweet coconut soup not overwhelmed by the smoky chillies. Sticky rice and mango is a well-executed conclusion to a traditional and tasty Thai meal.

The small but well-selected wine list is complemented by a selection of freshly-made fruit shakes. As with the food, drinks are well-priced. The new location boasts a wide-screen TV showing major sporting events, tucked thoughtfully into a corner so as not to distract uninterested diners, and a DVD and book library for guests to browse.Watch expatriates sipping Ricard in the evening, its easy to forget you’re in Bangkok. Until the starters arrive.
